Claudia Losi - Les Funeraille de la Baleine (2010)

Losi's piece is a full size "Fin Whale" constructed out of cashmere suiting fabric. During the last few years she had the work exhibited in several countries, allowing different people from different cultures touch, lie down next to and photograph the ginormous whale.

In November last year she than had the whale 'dissected' and made into several cashmere blazers, which then the memories of the whale's journey, were sewed into.

I think what I like most about this piece, is the lengthy process she went through for her idea. First of all to spend six years to create such a piece, have it moved through different countries around the world and then having the whale cut up into blazers, really is a costly and time consuming process.

I think Losi's whole idea was based through recycling of fabrics. The whale had been so many places and had experienced so many people, for a long time that it had to end at some point. At the end of the day the whale is still made out of suiting fabric, so why not have it made into blazers and have them auctioned off to raise money? A hard decision of Losi's to make but certainly a fashion forward way of thinking, that fabrics must move on, be recycled and be created into new and exciting clothing.

Not to forget that the memories that blazer contains, would be beautiful.
